Bootsy, you are a friggin' idiot.
I have an IQ of 187 and I am also a member of Mensa. The reason that I'm telling you this is because I have the uncanny ability to memorize thousands upon thousands of musical pieces. Note for note. Not just one instrument... but ALL of the instruments involved. I can also write them out note for note. Everything from rock, to jazz, to operas, symphonies, and , of course, The Grateful Dead. My memory is LAW.
I have seen DSO 104 times and they have played many, many, many of the shows that I have memorized. Some, I've even heard twice. One of them was 05/08/77. DSO certainly, without a doubt, DOES NOT play shows note for note. For the last time.... they merely play the same setlist. They improvise by deciding what licks and phrases to play on the fly. Yes, they definetely use most, if not all of the same licks and phrases that the originals did...., but it is still improvisation, nonetheless. They are simply improvising in the style of the Dead. And people love it!!! Some don't and that's cool.... but why work so hard to change everyone else's mind? My guess is that DSO does such a good job of recreating HOW the Dead played that you mistook it as being played note for note.
Ever heard of stride piano? So is a pianist who plays in that style also sucking people dry (as you would say)? How 'bout musicians who specialize in jazz Bebop? are those musicians sucking people dry as well? No, of course not. The Grateful Dead are so unique that they created a new style of music in the process. I can also play the guitar. I can improvise just like Jerry did. I use endless combinations of Jerry's licks and runs to do so. In other words, I play in the style of Jerry Garcia. Get it? That's all DSO is doing.
You are a nut job, man. I see that they are casting votes against you now. I'd vote to have you kicked out as well. You really have no idea what you are talking about.... trust me on this. Chuck's memory is LAW!! If they, or any band or musician were playing note for note, I would pick it up instantly.
