Hi - sorry for the delay...
I'm not really sure that a mixolydian would sound so good with Deal. I think it actually does prefer a pentatonic bluesy lead. But let's try it and find out.
First, look at your fretboard and think "major" rather than pentatonic. Pentatonic is, as the name implies, a 5-tone scale, which skips over some of the notes that make a lydian, mixolydian, or whatever major mode we might be talking about. So, think of a major, 8-tone scale.
Of course, you can play A major all up and down the fingerboard in various different patterns. Anywhere you go on the board, the sequence of intervals (Whole steps and half steps) remains the same, from A to A: WWhWWWh.
Now, change the pattern of intervals (in your mind) to WWhWWhW. Lots of folks call this 'dropping the 7th'. Now, look over the fretboard and take note of where those dropped 7ths are. Put on a long "Deal" jam and play both ways for a while, some time with WWhWWWh and some time with WWhWWhW. You will hear the difference and you will be able to hear it anywhere on the fretboard.
Is that a little clearer?
