First let me say, I am sorry to hear that Scott is gone. I know he was a founder of DSO, and after reading Rob's note to us, I am glad that DSO is continuing. Scott helped build something that means so much to so many. I can't put into words, nor probably can others, tell what the Dead have done, and recreating that experience is a new echo of ALL GOOD THINGS. I never knew Scott, but I knew him, and singing the song, and watering the seed that he planted years ago, would make him smile. Thanks DSO for everything. You have done a lot, for a lot of people, on so many levels. Scott, may the forwinds blow you safely home. We love you more that words can tell.

There is a poem by Robert Hunter entitled "An American Adventure". David Gans once read it on the GD Hour, backed up by recorded GD music. It's quite long. I think it runs well over 15min.

I'd like to suggest that it would be very very cool indeed if Gans would read it at Nelson with DSO backing him up.

I've sent a couple emails to Gans about it. He seemed to think it might be cool, so now I'm also posting the request here.

Anybody remember that poem? Agree that it would be cool?

First and foremost: My friends and I were shocked and saddened over Scott's untimely passing. We have seen 8 DSO shows in the NYC area and have always enjoyed the band. Scott always seemed to have a smile on his face and he will be missed. Our prayers go out to his family.
And kudos to the rest of you to be able to go back on tour so quickly.
My buddies and I have been following the Dead since college ( we graduated from UofM in 1990) and my old roommate is getting married on Memorial Day. We are having his bachelor party Friday night and are starting with the DSO show. A late 80's show/early 90's (1988-1991 ideally) would be a fantastic sendoff for my buddy on his way to wedded bliss. Either way, we will see you at the end of the month. Thanks.

Having grown up in NJ, and watching movies at the "Carlton", as it was orginally called, I must urge all Deadheads to hit the Count Basie in Red Bank in June to see DSO. I am an ex-pat in Colorado, but can tell you the Basie is an awesome 1930's movie theatre- complete with muraled ceilings and chandelier, very close to a Winterland, East or West. Us Jersey kids got to see Bruce Springsteen play here in the mid 70's, before the big time. I'm sorry I'll miss it. Enjoy, and tip the bartenders at the Dubliner.

Dearest DSO FAMILY AND FRIENDS,

I have been out of touch for only a week or so and had no idea of what had happened until this morning (Saturday) when I received an email update from JimMiller band(a band DSO had jammed with before).
I am deeply shocked, saddened, and terribly upset. We are so sorry for the whole DSO family and we send our deepest sympathy, condolences, love, and prayers to you all.
Tears of grief and joy roll down my face as I remember our dear brother Scott:
Always first on stage, right over to his organ and keyboards, always with a great big smile, always talked to we dancers up front, always joking and taking our ribbing in recent times about his new hair styles, and always, always, totally deadicated to playin’ with total abandon the whirling dervish of magical music that lifted our spirits higher than any other.

His pure talent created a cavalcade of swirling rhythm which hypnotized us into a state of ecstasy and unadulterated joy. We will truly miss our dear beloved brother Scott, and as I break the news to my daughter, our dancin hippie chick Karrie, she remembers him with fondness and memories of laughter and smiles.

To all the DSO family and band: As the coming weeks ahead test your resolve and see you through the grieving, remember that you are never alone and we are here for support, love, and hugs. You have ALL given SO MUCH of yourselves to us over the years, we have all that love here for you to see you through.

As I go I am comforted in my grieving by the thought that Scott is with his brothers Brent, Keith, and PigPen, jamming in a heavenly mist of vibe and rhythm as they mesh their ivories together for the audiences that have gone before us, up high. LOL.

Peace to you my brother Scott, and don’t let Pigpen give you hassle about your haircut, we think you are the coolest!

ALL OUR LOVE TO YOU ALL

jimi, Karrie, and family

My brother, Sandon, and I have shares a love for the Dead. We toured with them quite a bit. We were together, front row, for the final show in '95. Our love trasnferred in spades as we were stunned by show after show of good 'ole DSO. Sandon was anguished at hearing the news, telling me how every show he went to solo Scott was there to make him feel right at home. Sandon wrote something for Scott the night of his passing. No words will ever be enough, but these certainly strike a chord. This is for you, Scott. God Bless.

The Keyboard Man…

Shining down with ivory smile
Left too soon, please stay a while
The loving touch of your magical hands
Built a world in every song

To you I tip the cap of life
Your memory lives on, even through the strife
Each moment is a lifetime, the blink of an eye
Can’t help but ponder, the question why?

The Keyboard Man, we miss you so
Someday we’ll meet for another show
The days will pass and seem so long
We’ll think of you, the family must be strong
God bless you Scott, till we meet again
My thoughts of you...one hell of a song!

We will miss Scotts smiling face
As we dance
During “Space.”
He has finished
His life’s race
Too early;
A sad unfortunate fate.
His keyboard he could play
A different song, any day.
We all miss Scott so
He will be
With us
At the next DSO show.
Finally watching his band mates
From afar
The Golden Gates.
He will be there,
Won’t you see?
He’ll be sitting up in a tree.
Taping his hand to his knee,
He will be
Keeping time One, two, three.
In my own little way
I have written this to say:
Good bye to a person
Whom my brothers knew
I had just begun to watch you.
There hearts are heaver than mine
But for everyone this is a sad time.
I have only been to three different shows,
Pittsburg, Nelson Ledges, and the Newport.
Taped by Shad which
Videos of you
together arose.

i know that this will not help what your feeling but when i heard what happened this is all that i could do. i wish that he were still here, that nothing happened. i hope i dont sound selfish but friday i was going to go the show in pittsburg with my brothers i really wanted to go because they never include me with this stuff, like tapeing or even just going with them, its things like this that make you realize whats more important in life... im just so sorry for what happened, this poem above is all that i felt i, a 19 year old college student, could do...

I had the pleasure to correspond a few times with Scott on various things, and he was the kindest soul and truly a nice guy. Add to that his amazing smile-out-into-the-audience warmth during a song, and his memory will last with me for a very long time.

I am deeply saddened at your loss, Scott, and I wish only the best to his family, friends, and band mates.

It's a fuckin' shame, is what it is.

All I know he sang a little while and then flew off.........

Way, way too early......way, way too sad......there are no words to express my sympathy to scott's family and friends.

Say you guys at the State on Saturday night (and in Charlottesville on thursday.....who would have thought it!!!

I'll never forget those last shows of scott's young life (or any other for that matter)...

Today I am in shock about Scott's death. Phil Lesh wrote Box of Rain in tribute to his dying father and it was the last song played by the Dead at Soldier's Field. So, today, in honor of Scott, I urge all the DSO fans to listen to Box of Rain in his memory.

My deepest condolences to Scott's family. Scott would always take the time to talk to you at a show, whether it be music, sports, the road, but he always wanted to talk about you, the one who came to see him perform. Scott loved his fans, and they loved him. I feel today as if I lost a true friend, even though we only saw each other 8-10 times a year.

Knowing the kind of person Scott was, I am positive that God left the lovelight in heaven on for him.

I sit here this morning incredibly sad and wonder why? My very good friend scott is gone. He was the glue to this awesome project, a project we tend to take for granted, a project we can't believe is so good, a project some said wouldn't work, a project that brought new and old friends together, a project that welcomes family and babies, a project that delivered every night whether the band was tired or not, a project that keeps on projecting and a project I thought was lost forever until I found it. I love you Scott and thank you for introducing me to the DSO family and network of friends, for putting up with me in the golf cart, for always making me feel welcome, helping me with directions to various shows and being a great Dad to your little girl, Georgia. I miss you more than words can tell.I love you buddy.

Greetings DSO & crew members!!

Here is my humble list of requests for your consideration of performance on your upcoming 4/28/05 gig @ Penn’s Peak in jim Thorpe, PA ... according to your list none of these shows have been performed as of yet

3/26/73 baltimore civic center ... a fantastic show that needs more exposure ...

9/8/73 nassau coliseum ... another superb show

9/11/73 william & mary college ... one of the better shows of that particular tour & it would be GREAT to hear “let me sing your blues away”!! And of course the “dark star > morning dew” speaks volumes ..

11/11/73 winterland ... so MANY good songs to hear!

1/22/78 mcarthur court, univ of oregon ... a worthwhile & famous show with a monumental saint stephen, terrapin, the other one, ...etc, of course the “close encounters jam” ... I’ll bring the LSD (just kidding : )

8/12/79 red rocks!! ... a killer killer show ... jerry is a powerhouse!!! this needs to be heard ...

8/31/79 glens falls civic center ... another great & little appreciated show (east coast return of GSET!)

10/25/79 new haven coliseum ... for the SHAKEDOWN STREET!!!

11/1/79 nassau coliseum ... for the 31 minute “scarlet > fire”!!

Serious consideration should be applied to these two following native pennsylvania shows >

11/30/79 & 12/1/79 from the stanley theater in pittsburgh ... both of these shows are justly famous in my book! It would be a BLAST to say the very least ...

5/10/80 hartford civic center ... another renowned show with an amazing 2'nd set!

And lastly, more serious consideration for 3/5/81 stanley theater ... it’s a native show...and a unique performance with the 2'nd set opener of “jam > passenger”

I realize that I’ve thrown a LOT at you with this humongous request of shows ... its purely for selfish reasons as the only show I can get to this tour will be the 4/28/05 show ( I have seen DSO once before about 4 years ago & I really enjoyed myself ) I am a life long dead head and have been to many of these GD shows I’m touting to you ... hence my desire to see them performed “live” once again

My gratitude would know no bounds ... : )

peace & high times!

So I have noticed you have been sprinkling in some Jerry band stuff of late, or shall I say Johnny band stuff. I applaud that completely!! This stuff is WAY TOO GOOD to not be played. I can just feel SCOTTY is dying to unleash the beast on some of this material. I was lucky enough to see DSO play some Jerry Band stuff ( or should I say Johnny Band) years ago. It was off the HOOK. This stuff NEEDS to be played!!! With the pending original sets at Wanee it's the perfect time to really show the love. For the rest of you all in the band, you know I LOVE YOU. I mean no offense at all. Robbie E. especially, hey you can gig with us while they are all GETTIN IT!! Here I'll start it for you all. " Scuffle for a nickle, struggle for a dime. Forget about you troubles, leave the past behind. How come the future take such a long, long time. When your waiting for a, when your waiting for a MIRACLE" Who loves you all. Thanks again. I forget to mention LISA. Her adding some much need COLOR to this would just put it over the top. Be safe all and you are BEAUTIFUL.

Hey now,

I was listening to Statebridge Lodge 8/10/03 today, originally played by the Grateful Dead way back on 10/15/76. Ok, hands down, in my opinion, it's the best He's Gone I've ever heard. John's pipes around the 6:25 mark, wholly friggin molly. So what I'm saying is, where the audiophile (nudge nudge James, Sco, & Eddie) that can put together a DSO's Greatest Hits? We can start a list below you write in your favorite DSO song and the date it was played. Let's see what favorites are out there.....

1. He's Gone, Statebridge 8/10/03 performing 10/15/76.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.

Hey guys, I want to let you know how stoked we are that you have chosen to play Asheville on these dates! Christen and I are celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary which originally took place on April 8th and 9th 1995. We had just finished GD spring tour (amazing shows!!) and tied the knot (or the put the final link in the Unbroken chain). We celebrated for two days in the same spot at a beautiful spring, so we always call both days our anniversary. The shows leading up to those dates (Memphis and Birmingham) were our last Grateful Dead Shows. If it works out, we would love to here "Unbroken Chain". Either way we're happy! From the bottom of my heart I thank you for what you do. Much Love, Much respect, Mark Collins

Hey, Durty Nellie's in Palatine was a decent lil' run I thought! Great show, and it left me wanting a lot more. I hadn't seen you guys in a year and I caught the flu 3 days before the show. My dancing was a struggle, my muscles were sore, but it still hit the spot and I was nothing but happy with the experience.
Just want to plead you guys for a classic chicago New Years at the Vic or the Riv or someplace... Wouldn't that be sweet? :) Either way, come back soon when I'm healthy, so I can maybe shake some bones properly da**it. Peace.

Hey guys,

Well it's been a minute since I've seen your last show. You had a couple at First Ave in Mpls.a couple years back. I also drove down to see a couple of shows at Martyrs the day after Thanksgiving a few years back. I am looking forward to seeing you guys back at the Cabooze tommorrow evening. The Cabooze is where i saw my first DSO show, I believe you recreated Feb 2, 1978 from Chicago's Uptown Theatre. Anyways just a couple of requests and forgive me as I've lost my bootlegs of a couple of these shows. There was a great Palo Alto 73 show which featured a great Box of Rain, Sugaree, Deal, and a great lilting Looks Like Rain with great piano from Kieth. Sorry I don't remember the date. Or else an 87 MSG that had Shakedown, Man smart Women Smarter and absolutely kick ass Terrapin and a great GDTRFB. Or how about one of me and my buddies all time faves and Dick's First Pick 12/19/73. Just a few ideas for you to toss around. Thanks for returning to Minneapolis again. I look forward to your performance, whatever show it may be...
Thanks B.willerton.

Hi, I was hoping you could recreate 7/2/95 Deer Creek show in a few weeks in Boulder. I think it would be really neat if you rounded up and bussed in a gang of hobos from Denver and told them theres free wine and vodka inside the fox (first come first serve!) My buddy runs a dog fighting ring in Leadville so he may be able to furnish the pseudo-police dogs... that'd be great! Thanks, Patrick Popo

A friend of mine passed away of lymphoma, Lyle Richardson, at the age of 36 on 4/4/04. We both were doing residencies here at the medical school in Urbana-Champaign and never missed an opportunity to see a DSO show. I was hoping you would consider one of his three favorite shows to play while you here: 4/24/78, 7/31/82, or the famous Ithaca show from '77. Although I wont be able to see it, I felt like just knowing one of those shows might be entertaining the audience will make the anniversery of his passing easier and make being on call a little less stressful.

All of these folks have seen at least a 100 Dead shows and I have been telling quite a story from the first time I first heard you guys. Its not that you don't do a nice job with shows after 84! Going to the Belly Up tomorrow night and would LOVE to hear April 2, 1993 Nassau Colliseum. Probably my favorite show due to an epic journey to Long Island and I've had few better (if any) moments in my life finally stumbling into my seat and hearing the first few notes of Franklins. Saw that you played March 31, 93 on show 998, so maybe you could pull out even a better show from that stint tomorrow night. See you there

How about a donna show for one night in Austin and a show w/ Althea in the setlist the other night?

It doesn't really matter though, b/c I know that it will be a great show/experience regardless of what is played.

Hey whatsup! Excited to see DSO back in Ohio on the 28th as well as all the nice fans. Last time I saw you guys was July2nd-4th at Nelson ledges (Dylan and the Dead, what a bunch of shows, that power outtage acoustic set was pretty sweet too) - what a time that was.

I was hoping for this show we could have somethin from the 77/78 era, with perhaps a help>slip>franklin's? maybe a 2/26/77, 5/9/77, 6/19/76 or a winterland streak show from 78? doesnt really matter, whatever you guys choose i will like :-)

Love to hear a Donna show to start things out on this Tour...74 to 78 would be quite the treat...and in honor of the old river...A Black Muddy River or Mission in the Rain filler would be the bomb..Catching a break in the weather for this time of year as Highs are expected to be mid to high 40's and no rain or snow...Should be a great night at the Pagaent as it always is...
