I will be one of the many fans to see you play Raleigh on Jan 30th. I don’t know if you take requests but I’ll make one anyway.

Please play the following show, as it was my first:

Hampton Coliseum – March 22, 1985

Here is my story.

I was in the 10th grade and had listened to the Dead for about a year from live tapes - mostly 1st gen recordings. I was supposed to travel from DC to Hampton with friends. The dead played 2 nights there but they were on a Thursday and Friday so we could only make the Friday show because of school.

Friday came and my friends did not show up for school.

After school I went to my friends house to see why they were not there. I was met at the front door by their father who quickly let me know he was expecting me and that the others had already gone. He carefully created a poster for me that had only two words on it in very big bold letters…”HAMPTON – NORFOLK”…and proceeded to give me a ride to the highway. He told me that I would be there in no time at all.

My first ride was from DC to Fredericksburg, VA. The second ride took me to a large interchange off 95south and 64east. The third ride let me out in Hampton about what I though was 2 miles from the Coliseum.

I had a ticket in hand and 75.00 in my pocket for accommodations, a freshly painted Steal Your Face in acrylic on the back of my Levis denim jacket and it started to rain.

The hotel was too expensive for me and I had no idea where my friends were so I found a cheaper place in Williamsburg and was prepared to hike back and possibly miss the show.

As I was prepared to leave I came across a small group of 6 other guys talking about getting a room. I asked if they had room for 1 more and like a miracle they did.

Suddenly I had a place to rest, and a ride to the show!

Once at the venue, believe it or not, I ran into my friend. The show was spectacular and the visions are an entirely separate story.

The show ended and my friend and I were standing outside talking. For some untold reason my friend who left me in DC was being kicked out of the car he rode in. Something about not having enough room anymore. He asked if he could stay with me. I told him that all my stuff was in the room and the people who gave me a ride from the hotel, well, lets say I could not recognize them if I saw them again, let alone I did not even know where the hotel was but it was up to the group to make that decision….if I ever saw them again.

Suddenly a light tap on my shoulder and the words, “Randy, we gotta go man, come on.” My ride! I politely asked about adding another person to the room but it was a unanimous no. Back to the room we went.

The next morning I hitched a single ride from the overpass just outside the hotel all the way to DC! It was a miracle trip.

This show carries some very special memories and to hear it again live would just be kind.

Thank you for reading this and I’ll see you in Raleigh.
