Though as you yourself said Jim Jimmer, after hearing him singing about something on History, the content of these songs do seem empty, don't they? I think the success of this album is largely hype - Jacko was everywhere at the time, wasn't he? You listen to this and you get a happy memory of innocent days. It's like when I listen to 80s albums by Prince - not because Prince has had to fork out $30 and poured Ajax on his face, but because I think "oh yeah, there was a time when Prince wasn't shite."
