When we were at my moms I had to do something about the toy situation because with 7 people in the house there was just no way to survive with toys everywhere ( and it drove my dad nuts). So I'd issue a warning - you have X minutes to put away everything that's out. When the time is up I get everything not exactly where it is supposed to be. They ignored me ONCE. I ended up with almost everything dear to them. Then every 3rd time they carried out the trash without a complaint(we generated a lot of trash usually there was one trip or more a day to the dumpster) they got to choose one thing back. I didn't have to take a single thing after that time.

It's continued to work at home too and I'm soooooo much happier. I've been trying to make them pick up 2x a day right before lunch and right before bed.

I also added this week that if I find it later say stuffed in your sock drawer instead of where it belongs - it's mine.
