You know, the nuns always told us to pray for a happy death. As a kid I didn't understand. Now I sure do!

When my friends Gina, Patty, and I were 16 we all had a parent diagnosed with cancer. My mom died in December '78. Gina's mom had surgery the next summer and survived it. Then, in November of '79 Patty's dad died. They were all in their early 40's.

When I was home Gina told me that Kelly...the sister of Kevin, the guy I was madly in love with from age 16 to 20, is dying. She has terminal cancer. She's 42 or 43. Too young.

Then, on the other hand, you have people like my aunts. They've both been ready to go for years. I'm sure that when Ardy goes it will be something like you described...a major catastrophy. She keeps bouncing back from all these crisis...and for what? She spends probably 20 hours a day sleeping. She doesn't have anything she really enjoys anymore. Her hobbies were reading, watching sports, and doing crossword puzzles. She can't focus long enough to do any of those things anymore!

Last spring our secretary at school was beside herself because her grandmother had a major heart attack and died. Well, until that day the woman had been totally healthy. She lived in her own home...she could still drive and go socialize. She was in good enough health to travel. She had a major heart attack, hung on for about 3 hours and got to say goodbye to her children and grandchildren, and died. She was in her mid-80's. I know our secretary was just beside herself with grief...but she kept going on and on about how unfair life is. I told her my true feelings...I think her grandmother was one damned lucky woman! She didn't understand at all. I guess if you're 40 and you've never had anyone you know die before, you have nothing to compare it to.
