在故事上，《天使與魔鬼》與《達文西密碼》其實關係不大，各自獨立；之所以說《天使》是《達文西》的「前傳」，除了是出版噱頭外，皆因兩書的主角都是羅柏蘭登，而時序上《天使》發生得比較早。
今次，哈佛大學宗教符號學家蘭登，被牽涉入另一個大陰謀。在梵蒂岡選舉新教宗的那夜，天主教數百年來的神秘敵人、崇尚科學的「光明會」發動攻勢，把世上最危險的武器埋藏在教廷內，更把四位熱門教宗人選擄走，打算逐一殺害。阻止「光明會」的唯一方法，就是及時破解藏在伽俐略古籍中的密碼，找出「光明會」起事的地點。
說起梵蒂岡，最近我們就頻頻在熒幕上看到。前陣子《向世界出發》的「羅蘭篇」，我們連續幾晚「遊覽」了梵蒂岡的內外。在《職業特工隊III》中，湯告魯斯等人也潛入了銅牆鐵壁的梵蒂岡，擄走一個目標人物。可見梵蒂岡的神秘面紗，一向令傳媒、觀眾十分感興趣，成為大家報道、創作的好材料。
但講到神秘，「光明會」在歷史上才是最神秘的組織，甚至有說「光明會」是世界的真正統治者。丹布朗善於利用這類神秘題材化成小說，擊中大眾的好奇心，真抵妗o達！
