每逢遇到國際大新聞,總覺得單看本地電視台的報道,甚不夠喉,所以我必會轉去 CNN、BBC 等幾個二十四小時國際新聞台;除了可得到另一角度的報道,對事件有更全面的了解外,往往還可以學到一些平常甚少接觸的英文生字。
就像今次亞洲海嘯大災難,任你看遍全港中文電視台,或讀遍全港中文報紙,都不會見到 Tsunami 這個字。事實上,Tsunami 就是海嘯的英文,但字源是日文。
然而我一轉台去 CNN,就在熒幕一角看到「Asia Tsunami」的標題,馬上自學成央ATsunami 自動被加進我的「字庫」了!這個字對我來說,絕對是一個生字,中學未學過,大學也未接觸過。現實中地震發生得比較多,人人都可以說出 Earthquake 這字兒;海嘯?試問你身邊有幾人能說出海嘯的英文?
想起另一件類似的趣事。當年初到海外留學寄宿,在宿舍中找到一本「宿生須知」,拿來一看,見當中有項「Tornado Warning」;我只知內容是教人避難逃生,卻不明 Tornado 何解,自作聰明,以為是指「空襲」!別怪我,香港甚少出現龍捲風,我又怎會知道它的英文?
