每逢遇到國際大新聞，總覺得單看本地電視台的報道，甚不夠喉，所以我必會轉去 CNN、BBC 等幾個二十四小時國際新聞台；除了可得到另一角度的報道，對事件有更全面的了解外，往往還可以學到一些平常甚少接觸的英文生字。
就像今次亞洲海嘯大災難，任你看遍全港中文電視台，或讀遍全港中文報紙，都不會見到 Tsunami 這個字。事實上，Tsunami 就是海嘯的英文，但字源是日文。
然而我一轉台去 CNN，就在熒幕一角看到「Asia Tsunami」的標題，馬上自學成央ATsunami 自動被加進我的「字庫」了！這個字對我來說，絕對是一個生字，中學未學過，大學也未接觸過。現實中地震發生得比較多，人人都可以說出 Earthquake 這字兒；海嘯？試問你身邊有幾人能說出海嘯的英文？
想起另一件類似的趣事。當年初到海外留學寄宿，在宿舍中找到一本「宿生須知」，拿來一看，見當中有項「Tornado Warning」；我只知內容是教人避難逃生，卻不明 Tornado 何解，自作聰明，以為是指「空襲」！別怪我，香港甚少出現龍捲風，我又怎會知道它的英文？
