近年常與內地朋友交往，卻經常遇到一個問題，就是自己的中國地理常識甚差，鬧出了不少笑話。
記憶中，中學時明明有讀過中國地理的，但為何自己作為中國人，連中國有多少個省份都說不上來？更遑論逐一細數了。
有一位我敬重的大哥，他太太是湖北宜昌人。有次閒談間，我問了一句：「大嫂幾時回家鄉湖南呀？」大嫂登時瞪大了眼，喊打喊殺！這才恍然大悟，千萬不要把湖北人說成是湖南人；當然，那個區分南北的湖到底是指甚麼湖，我不知道。
有兩位來自山東煙台蓬萊島的朋友，我有一次寫文章提及他們時，簡略稱之為「他來自東北」；結果二人大大抗議：「我們不是東北人，是山東人！」我真不明白，山東不是在東北嗎？難道他們的東北定義，跟我們不同麼？
然後有位來自新疆的女孩，我經常一時口快，把她說成來自西藏。她似乎已習以為常，居然說：「無所謂呀，反正新疆、西藏、蘭州都是邊陲，一般人分不出來的，我們都合稱為『新西蘭』！」然後她又滔滔不絕地解釋三個地方再加蒙古的地理特性……原來中國有個新西蘭，我無言了。
