晾衫竹雖然未至於完全「絕種」，但其實離那日子也不遠了。
在一些歷史悠久的公屋，諸如愛民邨、彩虹邨之類，你會看到家家戶戶外牆都預設有三四個「洞」，專門用來「插」晾衫竹的；以往，這些「洞」都會全部被「插」上五顏六色的晾衫竹，再加上竹上五顏六色的衣物，這一度是「舊香港十景」之一：「萬國旗」。
今時今日，再經過這些公屋，你會發現「萬國旗」已然不再，十戶中大概只有一戶，仍有使用晾衫竹。
而隨着晾衫竹的沒落，那位謎一般的男人也絕迹於江湖了！大家記得他否？當年他會擔着數支晾衫竹，在街上遊弋叫喊，以售賣和維修晾衫竹為生。他從何而來？往那兒去？沒有人知道，故在我小小的心靈中，他一直是「謎一樣的男人」。
晾衫竹的後繼者，是晾衫繩、晾衫架，甚至是乾衣機。我有用過一種金屬製（鋁？）的晾衫「竹」，非常輕便，更可伸縮；但有一次，大概因負荷過重，突然「金屬疲勞」，整支「竹」屈曲折斷，搞到一都係衫。當其時，終於領悟到傳統晾衫竹的優點了。（《絕種東西系列》之七）
