若你現在新登記成為 ICQ 的用家，你會被編配一個九位數字的 ICQ 號碼。這說明了，現時全球 ICQ 的用戶，數以億計！
若干年前，當我初用 ICQ 之時，獲編配的是六位數字號碼。數年之間，由幾十萬用戶增加到幾億，確是巨大增長！
這令我聯想起一些久遠的記憶。曾幾何時，香港的電話號碼只有六位數字，卻另有一個地區碼：香港區是五，九龍區是三，新界及離島區是一二（後改為零）。若打同區的號碼，只須撥六位數字即可；若跨區撥號，則須先撥區碼。
後來，區碼制取消，原來的五、三、零自動成為電話號碼的一部分，即變相成為七位數字號碼。維持了若干年後，到九十年代又增多一個數字，變成現在的八位數字電話碼。
數位愈多，即用戶愈多，同時這個世界也就愈複雜。六位號碼的年代，一本小小數頁的手寫電話簿，已可記下所有親戚朋友的電話；現在？大家居然要用到掌上電腦。
有趣的是，對當年那些六位數電話號碼，現在居然仍記憶猶新，隨口可以背幾個出來；但現在那些八位數的，反而就說不上來了。
