曾幾何時，中學生夢寐以求的東西，只是一雙波鞋，而已。
他們可以每天以「維他奶」、「時時食」（一種夾心餅乾）當午飯，把飯錢省下大半，儲它一兩個月，就夠錢去買一雙最新款的波鞋了。
當然，也有別的方法。例如：直接向父母「申請」買、變賣舊書、賺職做補習賺錢、或以暑期工收入來購買等等，可謂無所不用其極……亦有個別例子走了歪路，去偷去搶，成為了當年的新聞。
現在的中學生，會為了些甚麼東西，省吃省用或出盡法寶呢？我的答案是：手機。
中學生幾乎人人有手機，已是不爭的事實。但我察覺到，以往幾年中學生用的手機，通常只是一些較經濟的型號（一千元左右），或較過時的款式（「繼承」家長們的二手機）；但這個現象近年已有變化，只見現今中學生手上的機款愈來愈新，愈來愈貼近潮流！當中更不乏三五千元的高檔機！
馬上想像得到一個情景：同學們在課室內，互相比較炫耀手機款式；為了這一併，省吃省用去追求最新手機，絕對可以理解！
二十五年前，同樣的事情亦發生過，比併的卻是波鞋，而已！
