Subject: Star Trek Movie

I am surprised there is not a thread on the trailer of the new Star Trek movie here yet. Have any of you seen it? I saw it today in the previews for Quantum of Solace. Gotta say...I am not sure how I feel about it.

Here is a bootleg clip in case you haven't watched it yet (or want to re-watch ;)):

I've seen pics and I'm not sure quite how I feel about it. For me, one of the problems with the later Trek movies set in that time period, while Next Generation was airing, although written all right, were hard to watch because of the staging. How do you make it look 300 years in the future, yet make it look like the past of Next Generation? It requires even more of a suspension of disbelief. Now I watch TNG and think, all that stuff, the touch screens, the massive computing power in small devices, communicators, hyposprays...we actually have everyday working models of these now. It doesn't even look futuristic anymore. So how do you make it seem like in the future with Kirk, Spock and McCoy, yet not look far more technologically advanced than Voyager and ST: Nemesis, which was the most recent 'future' Star Trek'? Stories are stories and characters are characters, but the 'reality' of the Federation and Star Fleet are equally as important. Will it attempt to be a 'serious' Trek movie, or will it almost become a parody in the manner of the Brady Bunch movies?

I'm not sure, regardless of the good intentions of the creators (not Braga and Berman, thank god) will be enough to make the functionality of the movie work. Will the stories and characters be enough to make their surroundings...their 'reality'...unimportant?

For one thing, they have 21st century-like motorbikes and cars in the movie, which I don't recall being shown in other Star Trek movies. That was part of why I was put off. It seemed too close to today's technology.

However, I have heard from everyone involved that everyone is going to be happy. The trailer did not convince me of this but I am willing to be convinced.

Just wondering if anyone knows why Voyager (w/Janeway and Seven) never made one damn movie?

I know a make-up artist that worked on the Star Trek movie...he did the Vulcan's make-up/ears etc... He read the script (under guard after he signed a non-disclosure agreement) and although he couldn't tell any details, he said that the script is great, there will be things some people don't like, and things that some people will think are great... which is the way of ever movie with such a huge and diverse fanbase.

I didn't have much hope for the movie, but now I'm looking forward to seeing it.

And yes.. a Voyager movie would be great..IF THEY DID IT RIGHT...which they wouldn't... sigh.

Well, I went to this movie last night and honestly, I was impressed. Not only was it entertaining, I enjoyed the actors in all the roles and I felt at the end of it that they had actually managed to reset the francise. Because of the temporal plot, they can go in any direction now, and it will be believable.

Great job in all levels.

My sweetie and I watched Star Trek this past weekend. It was an impressive action flick. There certainly was something for just about everyone. Could have used more technobabble, though. The actors played their parts very well.

I've never been a huge fan of Kirk's smart a$$ atitude and this was even more prominent in the movie. The special effects were amazing, especially the close-ups of the ships.

All said, it's worth watching.

My favourite Star Trek movies still stand, First Contact and the Voyage Home.

Agreed. I really liked this movie. My only complaint is that it is based on a crew and time I never had much attachment to (TOS crew in 23rd century). I enjoyed it nonetheless. I am looking forward to the 2011 sequel!

It's reached the UK - I've seen it twice now and really enjoyed it. Very believable characters, funny and fast-moving. Lots of references to the original series and to Enterprise. Clever to put it in an alternative reality, so that there can be sequels to the prequel.... Nice to see Uhura have a reasonable role, though it could do with a few more female parts.
