Think I just posted a blank message...sorry, AF! (Somehow the "Tab" key is not working on this page, and the "Enter" key caused a transmission.)

Anyway, that was an amazing story, Julie W. And more the kind of story I expected to hear about the tragedy -- people pulling together in the face of adversity. But I can understand better now that I know how widespread the desperation and corruption was.

I also recently read in the local paper that the problem is partly political. Bush & Co. wanted the Democratic governor to hand over the reins before they would step in with federal assistance, and she didn't want to give them what amounted to power of federal martial law. I can understand her not trusting them...and some people said they wouldn't have demanded complete control if she'd've been a Republican...that they wanted the opportunity to blame any problems on her administration. ("The poor infrastructure was due to..." "The slow response was because..." etc.)

I don't know how true that all is, but if it is the case, how sad that politics came before the lives of human beings.
