I've been worried about the bees - sudden hive death syndrome is here in the UK and earlier this summer both the honey bees and wild bees were notable by their scarcity. So my daisy-covered lawn was left uncut because there were a few bees dining out and then I went away for a week and found my lawn covered in white clover and it was *humming* with honey bees and bumble bees, hover flies and bugs I have yet to identify. Wonderful! But I couldn't mow it until the clover was well and truly over - and then, to my amazement I discovered that the grass really had benefitted from the soil enriching qualities of the clover and was greener and stronger. (And likewise, when I came to clear up my potting table, it was occupied by a small hive of great big dumbledores, so, rather like the rest of my home, I only tidied the middle bit.)

There are slow worms (a harmless snake) in the ground elder bed (an invasive weed) and badgers under the branch pile. Now the bees have moved to the oregano, marjoram and borage and are busy pollinating the beans and zucchini. I haven't retired yet, but damn, I can see why gardening is such a dream way to pass the time, after all, I hardly like to disturb any of the critters who live out there, so spend quite a bit of time in the hammock!

love to all!
Ms D
