Subject: I've been playing at Yahoo a lot lately
In reply to: coyotyl 's message, "hey HellCat, don't get messed up with JYD on my account ..." on 23:21:16 08/17/04 Tue

The Flipside site I played at has a much prettier Hoyle Games style interface, but they have the nasty habit of putting spyware on your machine.

The other advantages of the Yahoo site are the ratings system, availability of a timed game if you're in a hurry and you can email the game history to yourself to study your mistakes. I play as jw63033@yahoo.com if you guys would like to schedule a game together sometime.

I'm fooling around with what I'll consider my own variation of the Reti system (since I haven't studied enough to tell you if anybody else is doing it) a lot lately - basically conceding an early pawn center to your opponent then fighting for control of the center from the wings. It may sound risky but it's really very, very sound defensively after you get a few games under your belt.

I absolutely love the psychological impact of playing Black with this hypermodern style of play watching White squirm trying to figure out how to mount a decent attack because after all "the attack is white's birthright".

The best part is when some hotshot thinks he's going to confuse you with the Queen's Gambit or some other prepared line and you reply in such outlandish fashion.

Knowing Bg, I'd expect just that -- for him to come prepared with a few memorized book opening lines -- the "Noah's Ark" trap, "Fried Liver" attack or whatever.

So playing something totally different that isn't treated much in chess books and makes him think for himself should be pretty amusing.
