again, it sounds like you did an amazing job given the uphill climb you had. Don't know if that's any consolation right now, but I salute you!

Gutierrez wins race for County Attorney

By JOE NOGA

Morning Sun Staff Writer

Crawford County Attorney John Gutierrez (D-Cherokee) defeated challenger Steve Weller (R-Pittsburg) by 1,400 votes in Tuesday's general election.

Gutierrez received 8,409 votes, (55 percent) and Weller received 6,996 votes (45 percent).

In his first election since being appointed to office, Gutierrez said he is excited about the future and serving the people of Crawford County.

"I am looking forward to proving to the voters of Crawford County that they made the right decision," Gutierrez said. "I will do my best to be a good prosecutor for the county for the next four years. We have a good staff and we will continue to work hard for the county."

In January 2003, then-Crawford County Attorney Julie Richey, announced she was leaving the job in the middle of her second term to devote more time to her family. Richey's departure left the county prosecutor's position open and on Jan. 23, 2003 the central committee of the local Democratic party nominated Gutierrez to serve as county attorney.

Weller said he believes he ran a good race and was pleased to get nearly 7,000 votes.

"I would like to say thank you to the people who voted for me, and say thank you to the Republican party for all their help and support," Weller said. "We did our best, I don't think we could have done anything any differently. Things turned out as they were meant to be."

Both Weller and Gutierrez said the campaign was negative, blaming each other, but both said they did their best.

"Obviously, negative campaigning will win you some votes but it doesn't win the day for you," Gutierrez said. "I worked on my strengths, and I know there were some weaknesses, but I obviously overcame that with the voters."

"I think that if my opponent had not come out with the negative ads that he did in the last two or three days and the people would have known the truth ... I would have won the race," Weller said.

Gutierrez said the campaign was tough on him personally.

"I basically was my campaign, I didn't have anyone working for me," he said. "I had to do everything on my own outside of my work time."

Gutierrez said balancing a case load with campaigning was difficult and he is ready to move forward.

Gutierrez said he plans to do his best to keep his office under budget and continue efforts to fight domestic violence and the drug problems in Crawford County.
