Your conversation with Sam will no doubt be hard, but often kids surprise with their maturity in cases like this. Be prepared for lots of questions, naturally.

I still dread having to tell Ryan. He's had enough loss and we're coming up on the 1 year mark of his father's passing, end of this month.
