sorry about the unfortunate news. you'd think after hearing so many stories about it, people would have come up with some sort of comforting words. it's just one of those things that seem to make so little sense. it never seems fair and, in your mother's case, it seems extremely unfair. my heart goes out to you and your family.

having recently lost an uncle to lung cancer after years of smoking, it's still a very sensitive word for me--as it is for most people i fear. in spite of the incredible loss i felt, i did take away some valuable insights--ones i won't bore any of you with considering they are things we must discover on our own sometimes. regardless of that, this thing can be beat. it sounds like she's armed with some very valuable weapons--a supportive and loving family. those are the sort of things that make all the difference in the world.

my thoughts and prayers will be her. please keep us informed about her condition and subsequent recovery.
