My Mom was always very open and honest about sexual maturing, but she did it in a very medical way. I wish she had been more casual about it. So, I'd suggest just talking to her more as a friend than as a doctor!

As for the issue of tampons, here's where I'm going to blush... I was so anxious about how I'd handle things when my period started that I practiced inserting tampons before I ever needed them! I have to say though that I was glad I did. I hate pads to this day and felt very prepared once "it" started! So, I'd suggest letting her try them if she wants to. I agree... they're much less messy than pads!
