Subject: REPOST I've been preparing for this day for 12 years but now that it is here I need advice.

My 12 year old started her first period today. We have had many discussions in preparation of this and she has a wonderful book that we read together a couple of years ago and I know she uses it regularly to "check things out". She has had "the class" at school, and she has had her own package of pads in her bathroom and has been carrying a few in her purse for the last year so she handled the initial realization very well. She only had three minutes before her bus got here this morning after her discovery so I offered to let her stay home today or a half day and take her in late but she said she had a test she didn't need to miss so she stuffed a few extra pads in her purse and off she went. At least she didn't freak out! I am planning on talking to her tonight about the importance of marking a calendar and how cycles are often irregular etc. I am going to take her to the store tonight to get any other stuff she may need or want to get. An emergency supply of Snickers miniatures (her favorite)maybe!

My mom never said a word about anything to me but luckily I was in 8th grade before I started the first time and most of my friends were old pros by then and I knew what it was. Mom only had tampons so she had to run to town and buy pads while I waited. She was late for work, I was late for school, and we both were frazzled by the time we got to where we were supposed to be. I didn't want Chelsea's experience to be like that.

A couple years back I got a Tampax Learners Kit from beinggirl.com. It has two teen girl charachters on the front and includes 8 junior absorbency tampons 4 pantyliners and an instruction booklet. Is 12 too young for tampons or should I go ahead and give her the box and let her decide to try them when she is ready? I know that I hated my periods more with all the messy pads. What would you do?

Did anyone say or do anything that made the experience special and easy? Other extreme - did they do something that embarassed you or made you feel uncomfortable? I just want to handle this right ya know? This is the first big hurdle to cross in the open line of communication we all want to have with our kids as they grow up. I want her to be informed and feel free to talk to me. I don't want to do anything that would make her put up a "wall" between us.

Man, I thought the terrible twos were tough!

Just leaning on the "village" to help raise my child! Any Advice???
