Subject: Wellllllll, about Colby's Baby Gap interview....
In reply to: ginger 's message, "I read something about that somewhere.." on 15:34:37 04/07/03 Mon

It was my first time taking him to this, what they call a "go-see". We were half an hour early and I expected that I could change him into the clothes I wanted him to wear (not the clothes he'd worn all morning and travelled in and had lunch all over!) -- but there was no such room to do this. I gave his name to the receptionist and she gave me a form to fill out and told me to go to the waiting area. So, I start getting him dressed and they come in and call his name even though it was really early! I sheepishly said I wasn't ready yet and the woman gave me this look like "How dare she keep me waiting?" -- and everyone else with their perfectly-dressed children was also looking at me. So, it took me about 5 more minutes to finish getting him dressed and fill out the form. Then, I took him and the form and his portfolio out to the woman who had called me, and she said, "We're not looking at pictures today" -- I was confused, but she pointed to the binder and said, "No pictures". I was holding Colby in one arm, had the binder and the form in the other arm, and was trying to put the binder down when she said, "I just need the form now." So, I had to put the binder down on her table in order to give her the form, then I picked the binder up again and turned around to give the binder to DH who was still in the waiting room trying to clean up the mess I'd made getting him dressed -- and the lady looked at me, "Well, we need the baby." So, I turned back to her -- Colby in one arm, binder in the other -- and am totally confused by how fast this is all happening -- and she said, "Put him down on the X". I put Colby down on the ground (sitting, not standing) and another woman comes over really fast and says, "Colby, we're going to take a few pictures of you" and she snaps 2 Polaroids in about 2 seconds. I had no time to do anything, even brush his hair or straighten his shirt! Colby looked at me, looked at the photographer, then realized that I hadn't put him down EXACTLY on the X and he scootched over about a foot to sit on the X. (That cracked me up! I hope they took notice of how well he follows instructions!) She snapped one more picture and THAT WAS IT! The whole thing took about 30 seconds total, and less than 10 seconds with him in front of the camera. She looked at me and said, "That's it!" and I was like "That's all?" and she said, "Yes, take him away now, please. Stay in the waiting room for a few minutes just to make sure the Polaroids are okay." So, back in the waiting room I go -- DH missed all of this because he was re-packing the diaper bag and it all happened so fast -- and about two minutes later, a woman came in and said, "Colby's all set." So that was it! I was sooooo clueless compared to everyone else there. It's hard to believe that we drove 3 hours each way for THAT. At least we got to have dinner with my cousin and hang out with her for a little bit before driving back.

Anyway, they probably saw 50-75 kids yesterday and I have no idea how many they will pick for the final shoot. There were about 10-12 agencies represented, and 5-10 kids per agency is my guess. About 2/3 of the kids were bi-racial, a lot of mixed white/Asian like Colby. Clearly, Gap has a certain "look" in mind and it's all about whether he meets that look or not. I don't know how they can tell from three crummy Polaroids, though. I called the agency today to tell them how it went, and she said they'd call the kids selected by the end of the week. So we may never hear anything, or he could get called. Who knows?! I don't expect much, though. I guess if I knew that's what it was going to be like, I wouldn't have gone to so much trouble. Well, I don't know, maybe I would have. I know our (Boston-based) agency was really excited, because getting a call from a major national retailer like Gap is a big deal -- there are plenty of child agencies in NYC so they'd only call Boston if there were kids they really liked.

So, I'll let you know!
