Thanks for sharing! Last night went pretty well. Luckily she had a very very light day and didn't seem too traumatized LOL! About the book. The book is The Care and Keeping of You The Body Book for Girls by Valorie Lee Schaefer. You can get it at amazon.com for $9.95 and I promise you it will be the best $10.00 you ever spent considering you have 3 little girls. It is written for girls ages 9-12. I gave it to Chelsea when she was 9. My reason for giving it to her then is two fold. First we were still reading together every night before she went to bed so after the younger two were in bed we would crawl into her bed and read the book together one topic at a time. Second: More and more girls are starting their periods at 9 and 10 now than ever before due to good health and nutrition. I figured it was better to be ahead of the game than caught by surprise. I wanted to open the lines of communication in a way that was not embarassing for her, and in a non-lecture setting while we still had that totally trusting, innocent relationship that was not yet tainted by her adolescent opinions or those of her friends.
After we finished reading it I told her to stick it on her book shelf and get it out and re read it anytime she needed to. I know she has read it many many times since we read it together. The book is illustrated nicely in "pre-teen friendly style" so it doesn't read like a medical book. It covers body care from head to toe. It starts out talking about the changes ahead - attitude, emotions, body changes etc in a brief introduction (basic facts). Then it moves on to cover the following topics, in order. Hair Care, Ears (cleaning, piercing, headphones etc),Eyes, Mouth, Braces, Face, Acne, Sun Sense, Body Talk (pimples, freckles etc),Hand and nail care, Underarms (b.o, deodorants, shaving, Breasts-probably the most checked pages LOL! It has little illustrated pictures of a girl in stages 1-5 of breast development and I am sure it has been checked often to see what stage she is in now! Onward...Bras (when you need one, how to measure, fit etc), Belly talk- Shapes and sized of bodies, foo, nutrition, eating disorders. Then on to BIG CHANGES section. Topics - Pubic area (hair, best kind of undies to wear, discharge, hygiene etc.), Periods (basic facts, signs, first time, buying supplies, when to change, how to keep up with the dates, Two pages illustrated nicely on how to insert and remove a tampon, pms, emotions, cramps, exercise, medications) All explained with accurate information, easy to read, easy to talk about. On to the Legs (shaving, growing pains, etc), Feet (odor, blisters, nail care buying shoes that fit), Fitness, Sports Safety, Rest, Sleep problems, Your Feelings. It really is a growing girls survival guide LOL! Each topic is covered in 2 or 3 pages so we would read one topic per night, put it up, then get out the book we were reading together. I think that by covering the whole body it didn't single out the tuff stuff to discuss. I would recommend that you go ahead and buy the book now! Read it thoroughly yourself so you know what she will be reading. Put it up until she is 9 or until you feel comfortable with her reading it. Share the book with her, let her digest the information, remind her to check the book often...example..when Chelsea got her first pimple I told her to check her book and see what it recommended to get rid of and prevent them in the future. They grow up too darn fast but I want to do the best I can to make sure she has all the information and resources on hand to make the journey through the teenage years as safely, and confidently as she possibly can!

Now...Go buy that book LOL!

You're gonna have to show us some updated pictures of Kat..I'm sure she is growing like a weed too!
