Depreciation being what it is, you can get a 2000-02 Xterra 4x4 for really cheap. Depending on the owner, you might need to get the timing belt replaced, and maybe exhaust manifolds, but right out of the box you'll find it goes just about anywhere. Just take off the aluminum step rails before going offroad. Next upgrade would be some good 31-31" AT or MT tires and you're good to go. I recommend the earlier ones because they have the durasteel which is more rust resistant, and have few issues.

There is more you can do, but really it is quite capable and you should figure out what you want to do before sinking a bunch of cash into the vehicle. Also a local Xterra 4x4 club is the best resource you can find to figure out additional mods.
