Subject: Re: can I get a used X model AND upgrade it to sort of an offroad version?

What a great question. My instant answer is absolutely. And it just depends upon how far offroad your idea of offroad is. It's different for everybody.

And I'll tell you this...

Once upon a time, back in the dark ages before social networking and iPods, in 1999 to be exact,...

I once took a brand new Xterra off the lot and drove it to an Xterra event that I had planned with a couple other folks. (When the Xterra was brand new and there were only a handful on the road.) It was a now-defunct 4 cylinder model. A bare-bones, stripped down model. Came 4x2 with "no nothing." And even THAT Xterra would be pretty good for a lot of what could be termed "off roading".

I have found that for my uses, it's that last little bit from the paved road to the trailhead that works for me. Meaning that .01% of total driving that a regular car just couldn't do. The part where you go over the dirt road with the big ruts and boulders in the middle. "Muffler killers", if you will. Any Xterra would do for that- even if it was 100% stock.

And then if you want to get fancy, you can add some simple mods to make it even better. (See the thread below about rock sliders.)

So yes, Virgina, you can get an X model used and upgrade it.
