Subject: Question about VIN numbers for the Xperts out there

OK, here is something that has me stumped, but I betcha someone out there will know. (And yes I know "VIN numbers is a somewhat redundant thing.)

Here's the question:

I see a Nissan Pathfinder that has a VIN that starts with "5N...." Now it has always been that the first digit of a VIN denotes the country of origin. Nissan was always "1N..." for US made Nissans and "JN..." for Japan made vehicles. US made cars always had a "1" as the first digit in the VIN, Canada "2", Mexico "3".

But NOW they are giving a 5 for the first digit on Pathfinders. I looked this up, and both 4 and 5 now denote US made cars. So the question is- why BOTHER? It's not for nothing, there must be a reason for the two new types of VIN number? What gives?

I think it's very odd, and I'd really like to know why they do this?
