Boy, this sure is a stumper. Wish I had a manual Xterra out in my driveway to try it myself.

There is no good reason why it shouldn't work. It only needs the flywheel/starter to get the motor cranking. If you started on a hill everytime, you wouldn;t even need one. :-)

Seems to me that if you can get it to turn over but it won't stay running, that it shouldn't work with the starter either!

YEp, this is a stumper. Maybe you should send this one in to CarTalk on National Public Radio?
