I have to strongly, but respectfully disagree about Pratt & Guza. We absolutely know that they are magic. GH could not possibly win the best drama Emmy for how many years under Guza unless there was some good talent there. Different people have different expectations from the soaps. Michael Logan thinks all soaps should be nothing more than second-rate romance novels mixed with Rikki Lake-style trash and, while there is always a place for some good guilty pleasures, my opinion is that the same old, same old is why the highest rated soap these days can only muster a 4.8 in the Nielsons.

I feel like Guza, given much more control of GH than he obviously has, could bring the show to the writing level of ER, West Wing, Once & Again, My So Called Life, etc. My theory on the problem which is blocking them from doing just that is none other than JFP & other network meddling. Let's face it, JFP's theory on how to runa soap seems to be to lamely copy whatever is the current trend in prime time. She attempted to make AW into an urban-looking ER and then it seems like she tried that again on OLTL. Now The Soprano's are all the rage and she's in charge of a show that already has some mobsters so she figures why not try to cash in. She never seems to think about actually crafting a show with it's own identity rather than following in the wake of one that has. She has misfired time after time with GH. When Guza left last time she brought in a wretched writing team and dictated that her buddy Robert Kelker-Kelly be brought in as a resurrected Cassodine. Thankfully that story was quickly put to rest. Now she seems to think that bringing back Brenda for a short term is going to help. Yes, the show got a good ratings boost but at the same time she brought in much better writers too. Unfortunately by bringing back Brenda JFP has painted the writers into a corner. They are stuck with Brenda and all this mobster mess because JFP threw big bucks at Marcell to return. Nobody is going to be satisfied because Brenda will be gone again in a few months. And then what will Jax do? And so in the procees of shoving Brenda down our throats for a little ratings boost, she's also managed to throw logic out the window as far as character development. We had a really sweet story going with Sky and Jax but that got thrown aside for a bunch of screaming, lovelorn fans who create bad websites like "Jax & Brenda 4-ever". In short....they need to get a life! Move on! That story ended. But that is who JFP listens to and I really feel it is she who has made this mess on GH and not Guza & Pratt.

So anyway I really do respect contrary opinions to my own about this because I realize that TPTB at the nets are not programming soaps toward me in the least. I happen to really enjoy the deep, dark, character driven stuff that Guza cranks out. I found his treatment of Helena and Stefan to be among the most delicious relationships ever on daytime. Others find it too depressing and stressful and would rather watch something more escapist or in Logan's NBC ass-kissing perspective...trashy. That's perfectly cool too. I certainly have some favorite prime-time shows that are escapist and not in the least bit redeeming in any way.

Thanks for listening to my rather long winded perspective! :-)
