Question: Do you know anything about Dan Curtis making another Dark Shadows movie, either for TV or the big screen? Any info would do for this long time Shadows fan. — Jonathan
FlickChick: I too am a long-time fan of the pioneering gothic soap opera, which I used to watch with my mother when I got home from school. Dark Shadows first aired in 1966 and added the now-familiar supernatural elements — notably tormented vampire Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) and hunky werewolf Quentin Collins (David Selby) — in 1967; other notable cast members included veteran movie star Joan Bennett as the matriarch of the haunted Collins family and Charlie's Angel-to-be Kate Jackson. The show went off the air in 1971, and inspired two feature films — House of Dark Shadows (1970) and Night of Dark Shadows (1971) — as well as a short-lived 1991 series. Series creator Dan Curtis confirms that yes, Dan Curtis Productions is developing a new Dark Shadows feature. "We are working on making that happen," he said. "We have people who are interested in providing financing and we're having a lot of conversations. Will it happen? I can't say, but it's a possibility. Do you want to hear something funny? We'd heard for ages that Johnny Depp always wanted to play Barnabas Collins, so we checked into it, and lo and behold, depending on the script, it is something he'd like to do." Curtis did not imply commitment on Depp's part, but the ever-adventurous actor with the sky-high cheekbones would make a striking Barnabas.
"I'd also very much like to work with [screenwriter] Steven de Souza, and we've had a lot of fun talking about it," Curtis continued. "Dark Shadows has an undying audience — the show never goes away. It's running on Sci Fi Channel and 40 episodes were recently put out on a four-disc DVD set — I understand they sold out within days and [Mpi Media Group] had to go back for a second printing. Never in my life did I imagine that the show would still be around." Is he gratified that the show has proved to have such staying power? "Let's say I'm very amused," he said with a gracious laugh. And so there you have it, from the source. A new Dark Shadows movie isn't a done deal, but it's much more than an idle rumor.
