'Port Charles' Remains Open at ABC
By Paula Bernstein

NEW YORK (Variety) - ``Port Charles,'' the ABC soap spun off from ``General Hospital'' four years ago, will air on the network for at least two more years, the network said Friday.

Rumors had been circulating for months that the show would be axed to make room for relationship reality series ``The Last Resort.'' Instead ABC plans to institute a cost-saving half-year production schedule for ``Port Charles'' in January. ``Last Resort'' is now eying a syndication run for fall 2002.

``The network is in the business of making soaps, and we're very committed to the show,'' said Angela Shapiro, president of ABC Daytime. ``There is no end date for 'Port Charles.' We look at it as part of an ongoing business.''

Shapiro told staffers Friday that the L.A.-based ``Port Charles'' will tape two shows a day for six months and then go on hiatus for the second half of the year, a plan modeled after the primetime method of producing. Daytime series generally shoot year-round.

``The reality is that this production model will save the network a lot of money and not impact storytelling at all,'' Shapiro said, adding that staffers were enthusiastic.

Shapiro acknowledged that ``The Last Resort'' had been a ''very strong'' contender for the ``Port Charles'' time slot, ``but at the end of the day, the network realized the ABC audience comes to see soaps.''

``Port Charles'' started its fast-paced, telenovela-style storytelling format a year ago, and it has clearly paid off in the ratings. Season-to-date, the soap is up 18% in women 18-49 -- a bigger gain than any other daytime program. For the week of Nov. 5, ``Port Charles'' beat NBC's ``Passions'' in the key demographic for the first time in more than a year.
