I have to admit that I'm not at all excited about James Stenbeck. I didn't watch ATWT when he was in his heyday but right now he just seems like a toned down Stefano DiMera clone. I have huge problems with this whole storyline though I also realize that the writers got backed into a corner with more real-life pregnancies/maternity leaves. This has definitely caused some of the lost focus that seems to be going on.

I don't see any true motivation for James to kidnap 3 women, hypnotize a police officer (wayyyy too Days-like), & kill someone. Is he supposed to be in love with Barbara? Maybe there's some backstory there that I missed. Why would this guy bother to go to all that trouble for Babs when he must obviously see that she's completely lost her marbles?

That said, there are some still a number of things that are enjoyable. The teen scene is handled well compared to nearly every other soap. Abigail was a horrible Teresa Fitzgerald close with the previous writer. She had no business chasing after Chris Hughes (and Nick for that matter). I was glad that she was written back into her own age group. Jake & Molly are a good couple though Jake really needed a storyline of his own. -sigh- I was also emjoying the Hal & Emily romance. I like Rose too. And, though I agree with your take on Julia, I love the actress and think she's great as a psycho. Unfortunately the whole psycho thing has been overdone on daytime in recent years. It's been a staple on Y&R for years. To me, that's a clear sign of lazy writing; right up there with twins and resurrections.

I agree about Bonnie & Isaac. Again, I don't know the backstory with Duncan so I'm still giving this a chance for now. Mostly I find Ben to be completely uninteresting in his big brother routine. Isaac could be a good character but he lacks depth and is a little too stereotypical. Bonnie is kind of a Whitley wannabe (remember Whitley from "A Different World"??) and could probably be more interesting had she been cast differently.

The thing is, last year ATWT was about the only soap that was fun to watch. That had a lot to do with the AW connections. It got the emmy sweep due to the fact that every other soap (maybe not B&B so much) was either mediocre or just plain sucked. I'm just hoping that Hogan Sheffer isn't already running out of steam. Hopefully this is just a sophomore slump and nothing more.
