If TPTB at ATWT think that three years was enough time to hook all the old AW fans, then they need to think again. It's quite possible that Tom Eplin wanted too much money so they had to make a choice but killing Jake off is as much a sacrilege as it was killing off Vickie. If that was the plan, then I would have much rather have the memory of them being happy in Bay City and never heard about them again just as you said, TT. I mean, at this point, the whole AW crossover thing was just plain masochistic.
I think ATWT is hitting a sophomore slump right now. Sheffer isn't looking like the golden boy that he did last year.
There's just too much going on and too many classic characters are hanging around with no storylines in favor of stuff like this Bonnie/Ian/Issac/Billy crud. And don't even get me started on the idiotic skin thing going on with Carly and Rose. And, of course, we have Aaron and the new girl for a summer teen storyline. Meanwhile there's no story for the likes of John, Kim, Lucinda, Tom, Margo, etc.
As for Jake, he never really had much of a storyline except for chasing after Vickie's ghost and hooking up with Molly. We never got to see any more of the sparks between him and Lucinda at the newspaper. Those two were great together in their scenes. Jake would have been great investigating the mystery with Simon and Katie.
I'm really crushed that there will likely be no more AW crossovers. I think it's rather silly that someone like Jake would only have Cass, Marley and Donna around to pay their respects. Obviously there are budgetary reasons because I can't imagine the Cory's not showing up (Paulina???) nor Jake's old partner, Chris (wasn't he with Marley???).
And yeah, I'm even disappointed that they dumped Craig Lawlor. The thing I like about Adam was that he's truly a normal, likeable guy. He reminds me SO much of my brother. Adam's not some phoney, primped up stud like Jacob Young's Lucky Spencer or any of the Pash teens. Now we'll have to contend with the likes of Aaron who's going to be a cheap Bo Brady wannabee.
