A Share is the percentage of households watching
that program out of all the households watching
television at that time. So a 26 Share means 26% of the people watching television at that time is watching that particular show. It is becomming less important
since now ad rates are set by demos instead of households.
And since there are more choices on television, obviously
the shares are much, much smaller, and insignificant to
even discuss on a national level, although in individual
television markets, stations use them, WNBC very much
want to know what percentage of New Yorkers are watching
their 6pm newscast, while networks main concern is the
desired demo.
