I have just begun a course for chronic upper back pain due to a spinal bone spur and a pinched nerve. I have been trying to relocate the nerve by traction, but still have chronic pain, so I am taking Gabapentin.

I began with 300 for one week at bedtime, then 600 for a week then 900, again at bed time. This is so I can get an uninterrupted night of sleep without heavy-duty narcotics. After a week and a half, I have already experienced several uninterrupted nights. I need to speak to the doctor about the dosage, because I have read that bioavailability actually decreases as the dosage increases. Makes me wonder if taking it as a single dose is best.

I am also experiencing dizziness, one of the most common side effects, but according to the literature, these side effects are generally most severe after increasing dosage, which is what I have been doing.

Gabapentin is related to the neurotransmitter, GABA, but does not interact with GABA or GABA receptors. Gabapentin is also not metabolized. It travels pretty much unbound in the blood stream. Literature I have read says that the operation of the drug is still not understood.

Gabapentin is available in the US (as Neurontin) in 100, 300, 400, 600 and 800 Mg. Capsules. I believe it is also distributed as Neurontin in Canada.
