JOJO: JC Chasez – basically what happened, start to finish. You and the NFL had agreed to do the Pro Bowl

JC: Basically, it’s a really simple story. Its actually pretty confusing at the end of the day, but what it boils down to is, a couple of months ago the NFL approached me about doing the Pro Bowl. It was because I had a new single out called “Some Girls (Dance with Women)”, the video had been out, the song had been on the radio for 2-3 months, so they knew exactly what it was and what they were getting themselves into. They had seen the choreography. I had actually been working with the NFL about making the costumes so I was kind of hand in hand with them on that.

JOJO: You guys had possibly planned on using NFL cheerleader outfits

JC: We were actually developing cheerleading outfits that were NFL cheerleader outfits, yes. What happened on the Super Bowl pretty much freaked everybody out and I totally sympathize. I don’t like getting negative energy. So what they did is a couple of days ago they approached me and said ‘you know we’re a little freaked out about the content now, do you mind doing the song “Blowin’ Me Up”.’ This song is over a year old, I really wanted to promote my record Schizophrenic, which comes out on the 24 th by the way, so I was really hoping to do “Some Girls” but I sympathized with their situation and I totally understood right off the bat and say ‘you know guys, I totally understand, no problem at all, we’ll make it happen.’

JOJO: And keep in mind you guys this was on short notice

JC: That was like 2 days ago, this was literally the day after it happened. They were like ‘we’re really, with all this going down, we don’t know if we can have you do this song.’ The thing is, even though the song has been on tv, MTV, daytime television, kids have already seen it, its been on TRL what have you. Its not like they didn’t know what it was about in the first place when they agreed to do it in the first place. Before it was fine, now its not. Regardless, me being sympathetic to the situation, I said no problem, I’d be happy to change the song to “Blowin’ Me Up (With Her Love)”. The song itself is in a PG rated movie. Yesterday they called me up and said ‘we have a problem with a couple of the words.’ They were worried about the dance moves and everything like that. They told me the dancers were inappropriate. Well anybody who’s seen the video or seen the performance of “Blowin’ Me Up”, there is no truth to that whatsoever. That is just a fun song, its about drumlines.

JOJO: What words did they have a problem with?

JC: They had a problem with the word ‘horny’, even then, its hard as an artist to change a word, but me being sympathetic to the situation I had actually agreed to change some of the words for that performance out of sympathy for their awkward situation. I’d agreed to it, they knew I had agreed to it. I had literally gone into the studio, I had changed some of the words in the studio track, everything so they wouldn’t have a problem with it. Next thing you know, they’re saying it’s the dance steps, it’s the costumes, it’s the words. Well, I had already changed the words. I had actually been making the costumes with them, with the NFL, I wanted NFL cheerleading outfits and on top of that, they said the dance moves were inappropriate when they hadn’t even seen what they were, which kind of put me in a bad spot. I was actually blown away. I felt like I had been accommodating in every way, shape and form and then all of a sudden I’m reading in the paper or online even they said I was going to refuse to rehearse. Well hello, I’m an artist, I have to rehearse. I have to know my own staging. I’m not going to go out there and make myself look like an idiot. We had it scheduled, we had it on the schedule. They’re saying the words are outlandish and things like that when essentially the song has been in a PG rated movie. On top of that I had actually decided to change some of the words and this was the song that they requested. So it’s a pretty frustrating situation man. I really don’t think it’s right because at the end of the day I feel like, sports and music, they’re a great marriage. I feel like its entertainment across the board. To really shoot down the chance at having a great entertainer and to take away what the halftime shows have become would be a real shame over one incident. I think that something happened and yeah it might not have been the best thing for them. You correct it, but I wasn’t even at the Super Bowl. I was home watching it with everybody else. That’s the most frustrating part, punishing this person for something that somebody else did and at the end of the day they’re worried about what I’m saying. They’re worried about the word ‘horny’ and they’ve got Mike Ditka in the commercials for Levitra. I feel weird man, its like by the way Ditka can get a hard-on, but I can’t say the word horny. He can say erection but I can’t say horny. I don’t get it

JOJO: I bet you never thought when you were at home, just kicking back watching the Super Bowl that what happened at the halftime show 2 or 3 days later, or the next day, would affect your performance and change your life in the immediate future so drastically.

JC: My problem is I moved my entire schedule around this. Its Grammy time. I actually laid off the Grammy’s to do this halftime thing ‘cause I thought it was important to get out to that many viewers. It was going to be a spotlight for me and I moved a lot of things around for it. Now I’m being penalized for something that somebody else did. I’m watching it at home, I have no idea what its going to do to me because I know what my performance is. Then when I try to be accommodating I’m reading stuff later saying that I wasn’t being accommodating when I changed the song to the one that they requested. I changed some of the lyrics even though I’m not really comfortable with it, but I said I sympathize with their situation and then they go back and they throw dirt on me. That is something I don’t appreciate. I don’t think its right at all. I even offered to talk to this guy on the phone myself. He didn’t even give me the courtesy of a phone call or the respect of a phone call. I haven’t gotten any of that when I’ve actually been nothing but accommodating and that’s the part that’s probably the most frustrating.

JOJO: I’m not saying this because, well yeah I’m saying this cause I’m friends with JC, but you’re a good guy, you’re a peace loving guy

JC: Yeah, I talk about sex on my record but that doesn’t mean that I’m going to do it at the halftime show. Personally, I would never do anything out of respect for even my family, I would never do anything inappropriate like that. I understand that it’s a sporting event and that I want to entertain the crowd but I understand what crowd is watching that. You pick your platform for certain things. Now some people might not do that, the fact is that I was accommodating and they should have caught that from the fact that I was willing to be accommodating. I think it’s a badge of character on them on how they look at me. It seems a week ago they were fine with “Some Girls”, one incident happens on television and a song they were comfortable with a week ago, they can an entire performance even after I’m willing to change it to a song that they chose. I just don’t see how it’s fair.

JOJO: When you come in Monday night, we’re going to continue this conversation. I’m curious what happens between now and Monday

JC: Are they going to pull Ditka’s commercial?

JOJO: You can’t sell Levitra anymore

JC: I don’t know if you’ll see any Levitra commercials during the Pro Bowl or not or if you’ll see, for that matter, any alcohol commercials. For an 18-year-old kid, you’re watching girls swing around beer with guys, sitting on their laps and stuff. What do you want me to say dude, its frustrating.

JOJO: You guys can see, obviously, JC the frustration, its killing the dude. Obviously I totally agree with him, couldn’t agree more. I can tell the frustration in your voice and I’m so with you on this. You’re totally in the right on this.

JC: I want to have my performance. I want to make my record. I want to make a living like everyone else.

JOJO: Let’s do some good stuff. The albums coming out February 24 th . It’s going to be a freakin’ sweet album. I don’t know all the tracks personally that made the cut, but I have heard a handful of tracks he was working with with one particular producer. Amazing piece of music. Feb. 24 th , definitely get this thing. JC’s coming in Monday night, full-on in-studio audience listening party. We’re going to continue this conversation. Here’s a strange question, will you be even watching the Pro Bowl on Sunday?

JC: Here’s the deal, its frustrating. I’m a huge football fan, I love watching the game. I just think this guy’s got his head screwed on wrong. I don’t have to watch him play football. I think it’ll be a shame if I’m sitting home watching the game. I think its definitely a shame that I have to be at home sitting watching the game.

JOJO: What are they putting on at halftime in place of what you were going to do? You got bumped, Fefe Dobson got bumped.

JC: They’re going to have to come up with something pretty fast. I’m sure they’ll come up with something, I have no idea what it is, think its hula dancers or something. It’s a shame cause I had a really good show put together. However many millions of people were expecting to see some sort of excitement from a well known pop artist, they’re not going to get it.

JOJO: I appreciate you being so honest. I’ve never heard you so pissed off.

JC: I’m trying to be cool about it, but it’s frustrating

JOJO: Is this the most pissed off you’ve been in your professional life?

JC: (laughing) I’ve been pissed off before, but I try to handle myself well. Again, I try to keep my cool. At the end of the day I’m just trying to do the right thing and I just want the right thing to happen and I just don’t think that this guy is doing the right thing.

JOJO: Who is your favorite football team

JC: I love the Washington Redskins
