Subject: Task 12

TASK 12

Woodbridge, Hutchinson: Life Lines Intermediate (Teacher’s Book), Oxford University Press , 1997. P.105, # 3.

The students are given a set of scrambled sentences from a text and are asked to work individually to put the events in order. Then, they are asked to compare their answers with a partner. When they get to a common order, each pair joins another and finally they check their answers with the whole group.

According to Littlewood, this functional activity is called “Sharing information with restricted cooperation” where students work in pairs, trying to discover sequences when none of them is aware of the correct answer and they have to negotiate in order to come to an
agreement.

The main purpose of this activity is to “force” the students to use the language in order to solve a problem that is presented to them – that is, functionally.
