The Task-based Approach is a way of teaching, which has the task as its “unit of analysis”. According to this approach, whenever students perform a task, they are practicing and consequently learning the target language, because there is new knowledge to be explored and it leads to teacher-student and student-student interaction. However, the task chosen for this purpose must be a “pedagogic task”, which consists in a set of activities involving new information to be manipulated and also varied communicative structures and possibilities. Skehan (1994:190) claims that the task must be not so difficult and not so simple; this way, students may achieve vocabulary structures and also meaning, instead of not producing anything because either they know a lot or completely ignore the content/subject. At the same time, he explains that the difficulty of a task depends on other strategies rather than only analysis and selection of the ideal task. It is important to mention that activities that are out of context, like fill-in the blanks and exercises that we may find in a grammar book, for instance, are not very nice, because students do not use such structures in communication and, as a result, don’t master the structure. The alternative would be a text not linguistically dense, which could test some linguistic forms and also provide the class with communication. According to Skehan, the class plan would consist of three stages: pre-task (teachers plan the tasks in order to know what is going to be tested and to certify that students will understand the requirements of the task), during-task (task transaction – time, length, group must be checked to make possible for students to communicate “at a comfortable speed”) and post-task (goals achievement by introducing a similar task, so that students would pay more attention to their mistakes and fixing them). In my opinion, it consists of good pedagogy, although I think it doesn’t work by itself. It could be joined to the Communicative Approach as a strategy.
