Explain what a lexical approach is. Describe its main characteristics.
Firstly, it is important to note that, here, we will be dealing with the lexical approach to Second Language Teaching.

In recent years, it as been an option from grammar-based approaches.
The Lexical Approach is based on the assumption that, in order to learn a second language effectively, it is far better to develop the skills to understand language in chunks rather than isolated words. These “chunks” or “unanalysed wholes”, as Olga Moravia puts it, become the way students will, eventually, realize how the processes work within the language and, finally, be able to master it.

In the lexical approach, great emphasis is placed on collocations and expressions. By doing this one is able to construct rather than deconstruct the language.

For the lexical approach supporters there is this belief that language is made up of a great number of sentences and phrases and that, when put together with other sentences will create the right environment to create coherent text. These same supporters claim that only a handful of sentences are truly, uttered for the first time.
Lexical approach draws a clear line between Grammar and Lexical. It is the difference between the key principle of a lexical approach which is that "language consists of grammaticalized lexis, not lexicalised grammar." (Michael Lewis 1993).
And then he goes on: “Lexis is misunderstood in language teaching because of the assumption that grammar is the basis of language and that mastery of the grammatical system is a prerequisite for effective communication.”
In conclusion, this approach goes directly against some linguists. Take Chomsky, for example: he believes that the speaker is able to produce an infinite numbers of utterances never produced before and this would be true language production. However, it is arguable that even though you produce entirely new sentences, it is with the structures you have seen before that you gather material to produce the new utterances.
