Subject: Task 7

Task 7 - Analyze the following lesson plan having Ryan's text as reference.

By analyzing the lesson plan “Buy a Car” having Ryan’s text as reference, we can notice that - in spite of the fact that this lesson plan has a clear goal, which helps students be aware of what they are expected to do, and we can not know or even check if the teacher has a consistency in teaching style –, this lesson plan has some weaknesses which might be strengthened.

First, there is no mention regarding feedback. Indeed, it is an important item that must be followed in a communicative methodology. In Wells’ lesson plan, feedback could be given after each phase (research phase, decision-making phase and sharing phase), or at least after the last phase.

Second, it could not be perceived a routine or a framework in this lesson plan. The teacher does not present a warm-up, a presentation, a controlled practice, a free practice nor even a feedback. In my opinion, a controlled practice followed by a free practice would be very important for the students to get closer to the specific language and situation which is being studied. A controlled practice would allow the teacher to observe weak and strong points in order to give a more coherent feedback, and a free practice would allow the students to feel more comfortable and secure with what they are learning.

Third, there is not a cultural awareness perspective in this lesson plan. The teacher would be more clear, helpful and meaningful if he gave his/her students the cultural environment he would like them to study and research. On the other hands, he could also suggest them to research a “buying a car” situation in any English-official-language country, they would like to know about.

Finally, in the lesson plan, there is not a student-teacher relationship, in this case, in terms of schedule and deadline. The teacher would make his/her relationship with his/her students clearer if he presented a schedule and a deadline, which would allow no faults nor delays either.

Therefore, as it could be analyzed, in this lesson plan, there are some positive points and some negative points. I stressed the negative points because they are really important and they do need to be observed, since in the communicative approach, teachers must do his/her best so the students can get fluency.
