Stephen B. Ryan wrote "Overcoming Common Problems Related to Communicative Methodology"[ http://iteslj.org/Techniques/Ryan-Communicative.html ]
Analyze the following lesson plan having Ryan's text as reference.

Analyzing the suggested lesson plan having Ryan's text as reference I can say that the lesson plan is good but it does not apply to the communicative approach as well. The text suggests that today's communicative methodology is learner-centered and emphasizes fluency over accuracy and the lesson plan seems to be focusing on accuracy over fluency. If a teacher follows this plan he/ she can cause on students loss of motivation and interest. According to Ryan's text this kind of plan that students often do not receive enough feedback as to how they are doing throughout the course can provoke this ‘bad’ results. The author says “learners need a constant stream of feedback big or small that can keep them motivated and learning as opposed to a assessing them with a single final semester test.” And, in this lesson plan students do not receive feedback from teacher, as they need.
Its true what Ryan says about learners’ need (according to the communicative approach) that is “the communicative approach in its pure form advocates making students speak as much as possible. However, language is also a routine and learners need a framework in which they can feel comfortable in taking that risk to speak out in front of others.” He continues saying that a useful framework often presented by many teacher trainers is:
· Warm-up
· Presentation (the lesson plan has its presentation)
· Controlled practice (the lesson plan has its controlled practice)
· Free practice (the lesson plan has its free practice)
· Feedback (but the feedback is not good enough for learners)
To conclude, I can say that I agree with Ryan’s point of view “if we do not become more aware of our teaching style and inconsistencies, we will have difficulty in continuing to grow professionally.” So, we as teachers should define our teaching style to reach success in our profession. Another point that I want to highlight is “it is important for the teacher to recognize potential negative culturally based perceptions of their learners and vice versa.” Again, I found so Interesting Ryan’s view “an instructor does not necessarily have to be interculturally competent to be an effective teacher however. It may be more effective if the instructor adopts a consistent style of instruction to allow learners to adapt within the bounds of their own personalities without being coerced to behave outside their own cultural values.” Finally, “Communicative methodology encourages a friend-coach relationship and it is “an excellent tool for increasing fluency, used exclusively, it also creates recurring problems that need to be addressed and counterbalanced with different methodology.” Teachers have to take care about their methodology because they can mix their styles and this is not good either for themselves or for learners.
