COMMUNICATIVE APPROACH
Teacher: Vera Menezes
Student: Aparecida dos Santos Silva

Create a good communicative activity and describe it to your classmates. Say which type it is according to Littlewood.

Frida Kahlo biography

Frida was a very famous Mexican painter. There’s a film about her life starred by Salma Hayeck and Antonio Bandeiras.

Level: Intermediate
This is a Functional communication activity – Sharing information with unrestricted cooperation designed to adult students.
It is an activity to be given when the teacher has already introduced physical features and emotional feelings to the class, so that they know what vocabulary to use.

Ø Teacher ask students to search Frida’s life on internet and each student should print one of her paintings and bring it the next class. If possible they should see the movie about her.

Ø Next class, teacher check with students the relevant facts of the artist’s life (what they found out on internet). (about 10 minutes)

Ø Teacher divide the class into groups. Can be two or three students in each group and set the activity.

Ø The activity: The teacher gather what was printed and hand in two or three pictures to the groups. Each two groups should have identical pictures. The task is to analyse why she painted that way and what facts of her life they can see in the paintings.
(about 15 minutes)

Ø After that the groups who have the same paintings sit together
To discuss their findings. ( 10 minutes).

Ø Each, new formed, group report their interpretation of the paintings (they are supposed to circulate the paintings) to the class and open for discussion.

It’s a very interesting activity. First because students will serach the artist’s life on internet, it is an out-of-class activity. Frida had a very controversial life and her paintings are very impressive, which will provoke different opinions among the students. It’s an activity within a context, the students will be analysing and studying a life of a real person, her real paintings and they will be in touch with authentic material.

Furthermore, this activity covers all the purposes of communicative activities according to Littlewood, which are: To provide a “whole-task practice”: To improve motivation: They allow natural learning and They can create a context which supports learning.
