TASK 12
According to Littlewood (1981:39), functional communication activities place learners in a situation where they need to use language for a well-defined communicative purpose.
Examine one textbook and choose a good communicative activity. Describe it and then classify that activity according to the types presented by Littlewood.
According to Littlewood´s a communicative activity should motivate the students in the way that during the activity their classmates can understand him and that all the students are being able to understand the objective of the activity. The students in this theory should learn the foreign language as a natural process. The activity below has to do with William Littlewood’s theory of Pooling information to solve a problem and Social interaction activities. I found that activity in the book New Interchange 3-English for International Communication- Jack C. Richards with Jonathan Hull and Susan Proctor – Unit 12- page 74- Activity 7. This is a creative communicative activity that gives students an opportunity to use the vocabulary and grammar presented in the first part of the unit. The teacher can write on the board a summary of the tasks and their time limits, like this:
1- Decide on a business to open: 2 minutes
2- Identify factors needed for success: 5 minutes
3- Design a plan: 10 minutes

Entrepreneurs

Group work – Your group has decided to open a business together

1- Decide on an interesting business to open – for example, a dance club, a health club, a music store, o a hair salon.
2- What do you have to do in order to succeed in that business? Use these questions to identify at least five different factors.

· What are the most important things you need in order to run the business?
· How important is the name of the business?
· Do you think the location of the business is important?
· How important is advertising or a gimmick?

3- Now design a plan for the business. Determine these factors:
· Name
· Location
· Product or Service
· Special Features
· Type of advertising
· Slogan
· Decor
· Other considerations

4- Present your plan to the class. Who has the best concept?
