Subject: Task 12 - Material evaluation

Examine one textbook and choose a good communicative activity. Describe it and then classify that activity according to the types presented by Littlewood.

I have found this activity in the textbook New Interchange - Level III – Press by Cambridge University - page 22.

In groups:

The students match each headline with the beginning of one of the news stories.

The headline presented in the book with the respective answer are:

 Illusion or Aliens?
A strange light lit up the sky as three students were driving home last night.

 Identical Twins Reunited After 45 Years Apart
Ellen and Mary could hardly believe their eyes when they saw each other.

 Man Receives Letter Mailed 50 Years Ago
Paul Jones got a surprise when he opened his mailbox last week.

 Job Applicant’s Life Saved by Being 5 Minutes Late for Interview
Lisa Miller is lucky. She missed her bus while she was on her way to a job interview.

After they did the connections, they will chose one of the stories and make up more information about it. One student starts the story. Then another student tells what happened next and so on.

In class:
Every group presents what they have created. Others students ask questions. And finally they elect the best story.

It is an example of Functional Communicative Activity which according to Littlewood I think it can classified as “Sharing and processing information”.

Littlewood says: “...the goal of the communication has been to share factual information”. Analyzing this activity we can perceive that every topic that the students will work them are so curious, producing interest and inciting the creativity to produce a context for the history.

When he says “learners must not only share information, they must also discuss or evaluate this information in order to solve a problem”, it is occur exactly in this exercise: The students will create together the text, so they will need discuss about the topic choose. He says other thing that is perfect to this example: “learners will need to explore their repertoire in order to express ideas for which they have not been specifically prepared"
