Analyze the following lesson plan having Ryan’s text as reference.

First of all I would like to analyze Ryan’s text by item, and I do agree with him that we are often faced with the challenging tasks of making our classes meaningful.

Provide adequate feedback – It depends if a teacher is working in a language institute he/she has to follow the school rules. On the contrary, a “real time” feedback sounds more natural, and both the teacher and the student know were they succeded or failed.

Clarify goals – it is very important for a teacher to follow a textbook, or if he/she is confident enough follow his/her program that has a beginning and an end, so that the student feel he/she is going to a specific direction. On the other hand, I don’t think a teacher should let it so explicit, such as “today we are practicing the past perfect”. It is not really necessary. Topics can be introduced naturally and the student will realize what the teacher is talking about.

Have consistency in teaching style – depending on the situation, a teacher can assume the role of friend-coach, as be respected as well. I can’t see any conflict in this behaviour. It depends on teacher’s posture.
Regarding student feel betrayed if scoring poorly, this is very common in English language schools, where they adopt pure communicative approach for in classrooms tasks but stablish very traditional ways of assessment.

Lessons need a routine or framework – I aggree with his framework and the proposed phases are very important. For controlled practise I would say he proposes a too controlled way, the dialogue may be performed more naturally.

Have cultural awarenes; Be clear about student – teacher – relationship falls on the category of teacher being sensible, wise, prudent, intelligent, practical, realistic, etc..

About the lesson plan “Buy a Car” I would say that it is a project and a very interesting one. By determining the phases the students know exactly what to do. For example the research phase comparing to Ryan’s text is the warm up and presentation. I can’t see a controlled practice, but it is a guided activity, for such a complex project students need management, information, and the teacher gives it as a plan. The decision-making phase can be compared to the free practice and the sharing phase can be included in the feedback step.

The content to be covered is not specified, but a teacher who decides to work on a project like this should see where it fits in his/her program, and also check if the subject pleases everyone.

Students nowadays, mainly to the age group the project was designed to, are very interested in searching on internet and with some arrangements, depending on the group level, ect., it can be a very successful project, because above all it is challenging, meaningful and fun!!
