Portfolios, that are a collection of student's work, are a very interesting and useful way to make students assessment. As the text indicated says, "portfolios are useful as a support to the new instructional approaches that enphasizes the instruction role in constructing understanding and the teacher's role in promoting understanding. By evaluating students through a portfolio, teachers are not only making a different king of assessment, avoiding the terror of final exames, by also given to students the opportunity to reflect upon their works and to verify their improvement. Portfolios can illustrate the "range of assignments, goals and audiences for which a student produces written material". Portfolios are also used to support cooperative by offering an opportunity to share and comment on each other's work.
In my oppinion, portfolios must be done through out the semester/year, with the professor's support and manangement for the student to verify their improvement. It can be used as a final project or a final paper.
