I agree that uncertainty is the major problem with fortune telling. The more you trust them, the more uneasy you will become. One will be afraid of making expensive mistakes by believing or not believing them. They may give you good news or bad news that never comes true.

Ultimately, one will still act in a way as if not having seen the fortune teller and keep worrying about the result.

I still believe in karma theory because it makes me feel better, at least be less angry about reality. I take it as a punishment for my wrongdoing in last life for some undesirable happenings and this help me to stop asking why.

I think besides karma theory, the movie "Paycheck" by John Woo gives another explanation which is even more pleasant. You choose to become in that situation. What you see is what you planned. Paycheck based on a science fiction of writer Philip K. Dick. John Woo made some amendments to make it sound more positive and sensational to audience.

I read from some elementary philosophy books that it is not possible to prove causal relationship. Happening Y follows happening X does not 100% imply X causes Y. There is no certainty that the same will repeat itself.

I am human. I need something to believe upon. Therefore, I choose to believe some causal relationships, e.g. eating some foods will satisfy hunger, though I cannot and will not try to prove them. I prefer eating to thinking.

Choosing to believe something to satisfy some quests of meaning is just a matter of habit. Everyone has his/her own habit. There is no harm in believing story of Superman unless the believer actually tries to fly from a building. It is alright if the cost of believing is affordable.

I buy a lottery ticket nearly every week.
