Recently in Mingpao, you wrote what have been in my mind for a while regarding overseas nannies in Hong Kong.
I would like to share with you a story about my friend's Philippino nanny in Hong Kong.
I have been living in Canada since 1987. In 1992, I visited my friend who was living in a small apartment in Whampoa Garden in Hong Kong. She was a well-educated middle class officer in a corporation.
I believed that she was a supporter of protestors in the Tianmen Massacre, since she had some slogans demanding for democracy in China hanging on the wall at home in 1992.
I felt quite uneasy for the way my friend treated her Philippino nanny. Her nanny was like a slave serving a physically handicapped new rich master. At the beginning, I guessed I felt that way because most Canadian after work still need to do all chores at home by themselves without a nanny.
I left her home at twelve midnight and her nanny already went to sleep. My friend knocked at her bedroom door and yelled, "Maria, wake up. My guest is leaving. Open the front door for my guest and lock the door afterwards." Suddenly, I felt ashamed of this friend. How could she be so mean to a nanny? If she was not educated, I still could find an excuse to explain her nastiness to a nanny.
If my friend does not care for someone around her, how could she care for the democracy of Hongkongese, the concerns of Chinese in China, or the problems of people in other parts of the world?
Later, I found out that my middle class friend wanted to be identified as a democracy supporter. It was a status to show that she had learnt the Western value, and she was different from the rowdy Chinese communists. Sigh!!!
To be honest, I was not one of your readers, but I am becoming one. Some of your writings had spoken for me and had touched me.
Keep on writing good articles!
