I don't think it ever really went away just went underground. Of course it was still a drug of choice for a few hardcore groups who followed the mind consciousness expanding experience theorum and , if I am not wrong , was always present at Dead concerts and other related events.
You just doid not hear of it in connection with college that much and when it did show up it was probably not broadcast in an effort to not advertise the drug.
Ceretainly this large an amount showing up in context with a college is not an ordinary occurrance but I doubt it ever completely disappeared from the college scene.
Other drugs of choice became mre prvalent and some are a lot more dangerous or addictive than LSD which is psychologically addictive rather than physically addictive with the worst side effect being a permanent damage to some peoples psyche or total disruption of cognative function ( as well as that well known and oft repeated bit about people who think they can fly or other side effects that lead to instant mortallity not directly caused by the drug but indirectly caused by what it does while you are under the influence ).
As the sixties showed the percentage of damaged persons from it's use was rather low for the amount in circulation , unlike things like meth, cocain, smack , and some of the more damaging variants and designer drugs that came afterwards.
