Yeah too bad he was too young to go that suddenly.

I know that a lot of people were severely disappointed with the monkeys when they found out that they were not playing their own instruments on the tv show and the recordings which sort of killed their popularity much like what happened to Milli Vanilli when it was found oput they were lipsyncing all their performances.
However Peter Tork was an accomplished folk artist in the NYC area before selected for the show after being recommended by Steven stils who was tunred down for the same part because he looked too threadbear with his hair alreqady falling out then . Michael nesmith who was cisrcus boy in the fifties shw was also an accomplished musician and songwriter even before he got his part and Mickey Dolenz who learned enough drum technique to fake it eventually did learn the drums and was considered to be a good though not a great drummer by people who knew by the time they began appearing live.
Davey Jones never had any aspirations to play instruments and was a very good singer who got his part mainly because he was good looking , british , and a good actor and could fill the " Paul McCartney style" slot in the show.

They all had ongoing careers after that show with varrying success with Nesmith who learned to be a director and producer while on the show credited with developing MTV out of an idea he had and a pillot show he sold to the warner networks which first appeared on nickelodeon and sparked the creation of the MYV network.
Tork of course played all sorts of instruments more than a dozen in fact and has no preferences choosing on the basis of the style being played.

When you consider that the show introduced the music in story line concept it was an innovative idea.
Kirshner was in charge and it was he who kept the boys from playing their own instruments even when they were all good enough to do that and Dolenz who managed to get him tossed so they could do their own thing.

Some of their hits were written by major songwriters and had major studio and other instrumentalists playing on the recordings though when they toured they did play their own at a later date.

Any how too bad he died that young. seems that we keep loosing people from that generation all the time these days.
